Dave you wouldn't believe how many times I've had to stop unloading gasoline because some fool is smoking while pumping his gas. And just about all the time after I'd ask politely not to smoke while I was there I'd hear " well, I can throw a lit cigarette into a pail of gas and it'll just go out". I then point at the sign that has the federal laws posted and then point to my truck and say "you're going to pay for all the damage you cause from fire and if someone gets end because of your stupidity you're going to jail" It worked almost all the time. I just don't know why people want to take chances and think gasoline won't ignite from a heat source.
Vapors are what burns and diesel fuel has such a high flash point it needs to be heated to generate the vapors. You ever use those old tent heaters in the service that use either gas or diesel to heat a large tent? Man we'd get that stack glowing red when it was cold outside but a real unpleasant woman to get started when we used diesel. And we'd use diesel because it would last longer.
