No you dont, because in its liquid form it wont burn, nor will diesel.
And its all you get unless you constrict it in something. I can dump a powder keg out and ignite the pile and it will only burn, but put a fuse in the keg and lite it and we get an explosion, because I have constrained the results with no way for it to vent. The more tightly I constrain it the more severe the explosion with in the limitations of the substance. Which is why I can use the same powder in an early hand granade with a waxed cardboard, or the later designs using glbutt, casing and its not near as powerful and deadly as the same charge in a metal casing, not to mention I now get a nice shrapnel as well.
In a cylinder the gas can expand because the piston can move down the bore. In the black power example we dump it in a flinlock, add a wadding, and a round, ignite it and we get a gun, and a rapid burn. If I "spike" your barrel, then you get an explosion. and in an engine it becomes detonation when the fuel ignites too soon, before the piston is TDC (yeah I know we advance the timing, as much as 22 degrees in some cases, but that is to compensate for the "burn rate" of the air fuel so that we get max pressure at the beginning of the power stroke) the gases are trying to push the piston down, but the rod and crank shaft throw are trying to push it up, we have constrained the burn, there's no place for the expansion, we get an "explosion" and holes in pistons, bent rods, and broken crankshafts.
