Not possible in some cars. I'd just put it in the glovebox instead.
I'm not one who uses suction cups to mount a radar detector. I always use the visor mount and secure the detector to the pbuttenger side visor.

His mistake was not being observant. If you see a pair of headlights gaining on you at a rapid pace, take the detector down. This is easier at night since the officer is not going to be able to tell what you're doing in the car *before* he actually catches up with you.
During the day, if I pbutt by a suspicious vehicle (either sitting on the shoulder, or spotting it driving on the opposite side of the road, I watch my rearview mirror to see if he pulls out-turns around. If he does, I take my detector down while I'm still several hundred feet ahead of him.
Those simple steps make it easy to enjoy the benefits of a radar detector alerting me to lazy police officers who keep their radar unit on (many of them still do), while not having to worry so much about being caught with your detector in plain view.
