Unsafe caravans heading for the North Yorkshire coast were stopped in their tracks at the start the Bank Holiday weekend.

OPERATION PLAGUE: Police inspect caravans on the A64 near York at the start of the Bank Holiday weekend.

And no less than one in three of the caravans weighed by police was found to be overloaded in the campaign code-named Operation Plague.

North Yorkshire officers chose the Bank Holiday rush for the coast to launch their purge on the A64, which accounts for ten per cent of the county's serious and bane accidents.

They found many caravans did not have their safety cables attached properly - leaving the caravan at risk of detaching and rolling off.

Out of 64 caravans stopped, 17 had tyre and lighting defects and 11 out of 33 weighed were overloaded.

Traffic Sergeant Mick Crome, based at Malton, said the figures were 'unacceptable'.

"In the past, numerous incidents have occurred involving caravans overturning or crashing as a direct result of poor maintenance or badly distributed or excessive weight," he said.

"There is no reason why other road users should be endangered by the laziness of these people.

"In the worst case the gross weight was exceeded by more than 250kg - over 30 per cent.

"Most drivers are totally unaware of the weight limits and what significance they have."
