Police blitz on dangerous caravans ==================================
A POLICE clampdown targeting dangerous caravans on one of North Yorkshire's busiest holiday routes revealed a shocking level of overloading and poor maintenance.
Traffic officers from the York-based Central Area Road Policing Group teamed up with officials from the Department of Transport and the Tyre Industry Council to mount Operation Tourer along the A64 between York and Scarborough over the weekend.

Out of 68 caravans stopped by police at checkpoints along the route, 21 were ordered off the road immediately for either being overloaded or having mechanical defects.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "The main problem was either too much weight in the caravan or defective brakes."
A further four caravan owners were advised about weights or the condition of tyres and one driver was given the chance to avoid prosecution by having his vehicle repaired and brought back at a later date to show the work had been done.
The spokesman added: "It was thought there was a general lack of knowledge of weights, and a lack of maintenance was a common theme, especially where brakes were concerned."
When the operation was launched, Traffic Sergeant Nigel Atkinson said: "Last year 29 touring caravans overturned in North Yorkshire, with almost one third of them being on the A64. Apart from the obvious danger of serious injuries being caused by these accidents, they also cause tremendous disruption on roads which are already congested to the frustration of all other drivers."
