I have been reading Alex's posts with interest over a number of years, and as you say Alex is as valued a poster as most others. But the thread as a whole was current over the weekend and the conversations, which is what the messages were, were current at that time. Over Sunday and Monday most of the differences of opinion seemed to have been aired and the number of posts to the thread were petering out, certainly in respect of the early posts in the thread. As far as wishing that people stop posting to the thread, quite the opposite it has given me something to think about and to comment on, I like a good conversation that stays polite and pleasant. When things deyteriorate into the sort of slanging match that you imply is reasonable the people responsible for them go into my killfile and I do not read them. I find it difficult to tolerate fools, and see no point in doing so.
