Underuse of brakes 5465So it is your buttertion that grip levels are no less on a slippery surface and that it is no easier to induce instability or skids. That's useful to know. It...

So you happily agree that the risk is minimal? I can't see how it's significantly higher than while accelerating gently or even just cruising at a steady throttle. If moving a hand off the wheel for a second is so evil at all times, we'd better make sure that all controls are moved within fingertip reach - and ban manual boxes completely.
The one thing you do know is that the cruising gear you were in definitely *will* be inappropriate.
No, I don't agree that it is absolutely critical and vital to keep both hands on the wheel at absolutely all times whilst *decelerating* in all conditions - Mark's already made it clear we're talking about engine braking too, and certainly not just hard braking, where I have never disagreed that it's important to be keeping a firm grip and not be wasting time with changing down.
I'm sorry, Ray, but I really can't recall when the last time I chickened a gear change up that badly was. *Years* ago.
I really don't see why changing down is so undesirable.
Yes, it is quick and easy to change gear. That's why I really can't see that it's such a serious compromise to do so while decelerating.
