Yes, I'va had it happen. Although it's more commmon around here (Hampshire) for drivers to deliberately obstruct anyone trying to overtake. We have roads that are wide enough for two cars to pbutt but it is common to see cars hogging the centre of the road. If you indicate to pbutt they move to block you, if you flash the headlights to let them know you are there, they have a road rage fit.
Oddly enough when a car comes the other way they move well over to the left so the other car can pbutt in safety then they move back to the centre of the road.

I've had several try to out accelerate me when I overtake both on single and dual carriageways. I notice it when I drive the 4xFord because it's relatively slow, takes a huge application of right foot to complete the overtake safely. In the Jag I never notice, it simply leaves them dead and that's it.
Bloody lucky for your mate. Mostly these types either bugger off or deny all knowledge.

Yes, some people seem to get offended if anyone dare overtake them. I've had people flash their lights, sound their horn, give various "finger salutes" after being overtaken. Even when the car in question has been doing 30 mph in a 60 limit, and I've pbutted them in a car capable of pbutting safely in a fraction of a second.
Part of it is ego, part of it is the startling fact that a majority of drivers appear to unaware of what the NSL for their clbutt of vehicle is.
