OP can clarify, but I saw it as the other driver carrying on past him.
Another curiosity to the story is why reverse into a spot in the first place? I would tend to do that when spaces are at a premium and I'm parking between two other cars. However, he's told us that the car park was 90% empty so generally I'd just swing into an empty section of the car park (much easier-quicker than pulling up and reversing), which would almost certainly allow me to set off again forwards too. Did the OP reverse into a gap between other cars?
Or, as I said, the OP drove a little past the spot before deciding to reverse into it.
Who said he was taken completely by surprise? The guy behind seemed to deal with the situation just fine. Perhaps he was just annoyed at the total lack of courtesy in not indicating. The OP *ought* to understand that.

Whilst the scenario is different, I find it amusing that you're defending a fellow poster's story in which he doesn't bother to indicate and yet in your other tale you make an issue out of the other guy doing this:
"he slams the brakes on in the middle of the road, no indications of his intentions at all - just brake lights".
If you're going to argue it in the car park scenario, then one could equally say that the guy's brake lights ought to be indication enough in this scenario also.
