Roughly, yes. Absolutely, no.
Most reasonably competent drivers can manage to keep roughly to a speed without watching the speedo like a hawk - but unfortunately, some morons are calling for, and being listened to I fear, cameras that don't bother about whether you are sticking roughly to the limit but will nick you for just 1mph over. Not here yet (in general, I believe that certain areas have experimented with strict enforcement), but if some pressure groups get their way it can't be far off.
Even with current settings, it is very easy to change speed quite significantly without being aware of it. Your high milage does not count in your favour BTW - there is a huge difference between something with a large mbutt and relatively low power, and a 'typical' (if there is such a thing) car with a much high power-weight ratio and capable of significantly quicker accelleration for only a tiny change in conditions (hills etc) or throttle position. Add in the increasing isolation of drivers with ever more soundproofing etc, and automatics without the fixed engine speed-road speed relationship and the problem gets worse.
What are 'speed' cameras for 5431Ian Johnston submitted this idea : I have rev counters, radios and sometimes even carry pbuttengers in all of my vehicles. I can optionally choose to check my rev counter, listen to...
This is all buttuming a reasonably competent driver ! As you are happy to point out, there's a hell of a lot of f***wits out there that shouldn't be in charge of a shopping trolly, let alone a car.
