For me, tailgating is when you're so close in my rearview it looks like you're parallel parked behind me. Less than a car length or two (at minimum) at freeway speeds is too close.
I have no problem with driving a bit close, but there's a good number of people who seem to feel 8 to 10 feet is enough time to brake at 70+ mph. I drive a Honda Civic which has a much shorter stopping distance than a school bus or other vehicle that weighs significantly over 2400 lbs.
The bus driver yesterday, upon finally leaving my butt, was driving about 20-25 feet away from the back of the semi it tailgated afterwards, at ~65mph in a downpour. I bet that driver is the same type as the one that rammed that semi in the midwest a few days ago.
But hey, if you want to tailgate me while I'm in the 2, 3, or 4 lane I'll do to you what I do to anyone else: I slow down till you get off my butt. I got a woman with Baja Cali plates down to 30 mph in the right lane before she finally pbutted me on I-15. Boy did she look peeed, it couldn't help I was laughing my butt off at her.
