It does appear that much of the problems in the USA are from keeping the technically knowledgable out of the decision making process. Everything seems to be some sort of emotional knee jerk or political calculation and full of spin and selling it to people.
I think a great deal of it has to be the insane popular notion that the smart and successful people are always doctors and lawyers. For some reason those two professions are what comes up in people's minds. But they are unqualified for many of the things people respect their ideas on.
In the bicycling world, the doctors have driven the use of bicycle helmets. Strofoam hats. But when one cuts to the chase and checks the engineering, the testing, and so forth, it's quite a different story. The level of protection just isn't even close to what it's hyped up to be. On the automotive side, we see it in airbags and buttine speed limits.
The USA is suffering under so many regulations driven by such things. It's hurting the nation and it will continue to do so. At some point the weight of it may become too much to carry.
