That isn't always possible when for example you are making a right turn through a central reserve gap of a busy non-motorway dual carriageway. The CR deceleration lanes around here are not generous at 70+ mph.

If a vehicle is closing that fast it is usually a rep mobile and comes directly from L3 at 45 degrees narrowly avoiding clipping other vehicles in L2 & L1 and making full use of the region of hatched white lines just prior to the junction.

Although I prefer to have such drivers in front rather than behind it isn't always practical. And once you have a right turn indicator showing they are free to pbutt on the inside anyway.

In answer to the OP's question: signalling soon after pbutting the 300m marker is about right at motorway cruising speeds. Although on some fast non-motorway dual carriageways you have to watch out for ambiguities when some traffic "planner" has put a lay-by between the 300m marker and the deceleration lane for the junction turn off. In this latter case signal a left turn after you clear the lay-by.
