Why does anyone bother to drive in the South East

I checked Stratford, East London to Bristol City Centre leaving at 1300 today on the government's site www.transportdirect.com . It came up with a car journey of 3 hrs 14 mins. This is the same site that reckons that journeys on country roads are undertaken at 11 mph. So it is heavily biased toward PT. I checked the same journey for this Friday and it reckoned on 2 hrs 39 mins for car.

Autoroute 2002 came up with the same route and a time of 2 hrs 29 mins using a speed of 70 on the motorway and 65 on A roads and 50 on other major roads.

The transportdriect reckoned that using the train for most of the journey would take 2 hrs 37 or 39 mins depending on route. Taking a coach for the bulk of the journey would take 3 hrs 29 mins. However, due to timetabling constraints the longer train journey arrived first, the quickest train journey arrived 2 minutes before the car (today), and the coach arrived a quarter of an hour later.

Clive George Personally I'd choose to go Stirling-Callendar-Crianlarich every time, although I may change my mind if I lived somewhere different. I'm much more familiar with this route. I've been travelling...

Why it took you 6 hours I have no idea. Perhaps you should try using an online or PC based route finder.

Ian
