My wife was driving our car 50 miles from home when it suffered catastrophic failure of the windscreen wipers in foul weather (lone woman driver). She called out the AA and the guy arrived promptly, and was very helpful but quickly established that the fault was not a fuse and required dealer parts to mend. The local dealer could not help and laughed when asked if they had the relevant spare parts. The AA roadside service was excellent - not much more he could do without the right parts and full marks for effort.
My wife then called our local dealer who realising the car was still covered by warrantee put her on to the emergency support for roadside repairs. They asked her if it was raining and foolishly she answered "no" - as it wasn't by then. So they said they were not interested and she should drive it back to our local dealers.
I know defective wipers are an MOT failure. My question is: Does driving a car without any functional front windscreen wipers consbreastute a moving traffic offence or in any way invalidate insurance? (I do not consider it a safe practice - especially in winter)
Fortunately tonight it was not raining so visibility was not much impaired.
I am disgusted that a so called customer care department can suggest driving a car 50 miles in this defective state mid-winter.
