CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) ÷ It wasnât hard to figure out who stole a hallway rug from the Upshur County Courthouse.
A surveillance camera captured the culprit bending over, folding the 8-foot-long rug twice and taking it out of the courthouse in Buckhannon.
Deputies viewed the video and described the suspect to courthouse employees, including Beth Miller, a magistrate court deputy clerk.
Miller remembered processing a speeding ticket paid by a woman hours before the rug disappeared on Feb. 27. After seeing the video, she confirmed the rug thiefâs idenbreasty.
Using information Miller gathered from the ticket paperwork, police called Sarah Zabolotny, 29, at her Elkins home and asked her to return the rug.
ãShe asked if she could return the rug and weâd forget about it,ä Upshur County Sheriff Virgil Miller said. ãWe told her we couldnât do that.ä
Miller said Zabolotny returned the rug the following day and was charged with pebreast larceny. She pleaded guilty in magistrate court and was sentenced to five days at Tygart Valley Regional Jail. She was released on Monday.
Miller said Zabolotny did not say why she took the rug. ãPeople continue to amaze me with the stuff they do,ä he said. -- What the heck, I'll play too. - Dave
