Why? I was in a fully loaded truck and managed to stop well in time, with even more traffic (maybe ten or twelve cars, so much shorter stopping distance) when I got there. There was no traffic whatsoever behind me when I arrived at the queue. I had been queuing for a few minutes and the queue had almost cleared to just three of us, thus giving plenty line of sight and more time for anyone to stop, if they had been driving normally, or within speed limits..
Traffic in the other direction was heavy, and the gap behind me must have been considerable for this amount of time to elapse. I had, indeed, waited near the brow so I could see further behind me, but had moved up in the queue when it looked reasonable to do so. There is also a slight bend before the brow, but sight lines mean that at and maybe above the speed limit drivers could have seen me and stopped, as I had.
The driver who hit me, acc. to the Police, was doing over 100 when he came over the brow.
