How are better lights wittless? Volvo invented the 3-point saftey harness that is now a legal requirement in all cars, I.E. the seatbelt. Volvo introduced crumple points, SIPS and many more safety features that you see in all cars today, and have the trademark daylight running lights and side markers (an idea taken from the sidemarkers on a truck). After inventing all these features you call them wittless? I suppose that Ford are wittless too for inventing the self-starting engine too then. Volvo have the highest reputation for saftey followed closely by Saab and Audi. Mercedes and BMW aren't far behind.
Could it not be the fact that the driver of the vehicle is driving with the incorrect settings for their lights? Thats why you have an adjustment in your car to raise-lower the headlamps accordingly. Maybe the drivers are driving with full-beam on. God only knows the countless times I have been blinded down a country road by some pillock not turning his-her lights off full-beam.
It is other drivers that blind you, not the car manufacturers. Brighter lights mean a safer journey, it is knowing what you are doing with them that makes all the difference.

Points for excessive noiseHallo, This week so far has set a record for me. This'll end up as a bit of a rant. Apologies in advance...
Audi - how do they manage to make cars that neither ride nor handle all that well, yet still sell so many cars at stupid prices?
