My invisible friend thinks you have problems.
You know, the problem with this grousing about the public education system being one thing and one thing only (you think it's liberal), is that schools differ widely across the country. My kid's school in Portland Oregon was more method oriented and artsy with the school even having its own small "farm" and a nature walk in a small conservation of trees and a pond it took care of. My kid loved it and did great. We moved to Phoenix and the schools are more goal oriented, teaching the three R's kind of thing. It has spare arts education and concentrates on singling out over and under acheivers and putting them in advanced clbutt (whereas the Portland school would have moved her up a grade to challenge her). She excelled in both and tested easily into the advanced courses. Now, one could say that the artsy liberal school more than prepared her for this one, or one could say that the way Phoenix strangles the education system that it isn't up to par. In either case I think kids do fine if parents are involved.
Xtian Fish Badges 4775BlackWater I think you're at least partly misdiagnosing the problem. On the one hand, what you're calling the prescriptive, procedural approach was actually failing a lot of...
And of course you can't tell me that the schools in the conservative bible belt where some of them still lead prayers and teach the bible are liberal. And if they are conservative they certainly aren't testing higher than the rest of the country.
There was a grammar checker on an old Amiga program I once had. It would read your document and tell you if your sentances were run-ons, if you used too many pbuttive sentances, how many long and short words you used, and gave you a reading level where it placed your work. Never seen anything like it.
Xtian Fish Badges 4774Actually, I wasn't remarking on any 'artsy' aspects of the public school program at all. I was remarking on the re-design of primary education using models that...
I had the opposite, and the combination excacerbated each other.
