Yet Another Person Who Hates Car Alarms 2077
Loss leader in an effort to capture more market share? Ask your mamma. BTW, it's the same placebo effect that leads people to believe that radar detectors saved the from getting...

I know for a fact that my car arm has only gone off three or four times, other than those times when a pbuttenger or I trigger the alarm accidentally. The accidental alerts are silenced in no more than two minutes and those happen only a few times a year during daylight hours. Each false alarm where I was not in or near my car was triggered by a friend's young sons who realized that they could set off my car alarm by pounding on my car. My friend's kids have grew out of their interest in triggering my car alarm. I did have the alarm made less sensitive, so that helped reduce my friend's boys from setting it off. My alarm has gone off only once when a fireworks show nearby triggered it. None of my neighbors has never been awoken at night, ever, by my car's alarm. That's more than I can say for some of their car alarms.

Even one false alarm is too much. If every car with an alarm cries wolf even once in a while, that's still a LOT of obnoxious, needless noise...

The more interesting consideration is if my car alarm is effective at preventing a theft or break-in? In the eight years I have owned my car (with its dealer installed alarm), my car has not been broken into once and it was only vandalized once (broken driver's side mirror). The car I owned before did not have an alarm and it was broken into an average of once a year for each of the ten years I owned it. During some years, my previous car was broken into twice that year. Each break-in took place while I was in my office working and involved smashing one of the windows to gain entry. I work in an area where automobile break-ins are common. As far as I know, this problem has not improved since I bought my current car. I still see cars that have obviously been broken in, so I would never considering owning a car that didn't have an alarm system.
