I don't care how expensive it is - there is NO need for an AUDIBLE alarm in this day and age. If someone wants an alarm system, they should get one with a pager that wakes THEM up in the middle of the night and lets everbody else sleep in peace.
That's one per year too many.
Did you know that, if you live in LA and your house alarm cries wolf at that rate, you'll pay a fine and have to attend "alarm school?" Wouldn't it be great if every butthole whose car alarm went off had to pay a huge fine and attend alarm school?
Not to mention the doddering old fool next door who can never seem to figure out how to properly disarm her SUV's factory alarm system. How f***ing hard can it be to press the UNLOCK button? Yet somehow she manages to trigger it herself several times per week.
BINGO. Audible alarms are based on the concept that making a lot of loud noise will attract the attention of pbutters-by, one or more of whom are buttumed to call the police. Now, think back to the way you reacted the last time you heard a car alarm; did you start looking for a phone so you could call the police and report a vehicle theft? Or did you ignore it, hoping it had a short reset cycle?
LOL!!
I think LoJack Early Warning is exactly the right concept. It combines a DIRECT notification to the owner that their car may have been tampered with that does NOT disturb anyone else, AND it gives the police a way to track it for retrieval (and, hopefully, apprehension of the perps).
Couple that with the blinking LED placebo alarm for the deterrent effect and you have the best possible protection without peeing off anyone else.
