LOS ANGELES -- A 63-year-old Cerritos woman died Monday of injuries she suffered when her car was struck by two other vehicles apparently involved in a street race in Norwalk, authorities said.
In Cha Kim died at a hospital before dawn, according to deputies at the Norwalk sheriff's station, who said seven other people remained hospitalized.
The crash occurred at Alondra Boulevard and Gardena Avenue shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday, said Lt. Louis Duran of the Norwalk Station.
Kim had been on her way to visit her family, who had to break the news to Kim's mother, NBC4 reported.
"She was really heartbroken," Kim's nephew William Lee said. "They had a really good relationship with each other."
The drivers of two Honda Civics allegedly were racing westbound on Alondra when the woman -- driving a four-door mid-size car -- made a left turn in the intersection, Duran said.
Both Hondas struck the woman's sedan, which rolled over and sheared off a fire hydrant, Duran said.
Seven people between the ages of 13 and 21 were in one of the Hondas. They were all transported to area hospitals, where six were in critical condition and one was in guarded condition, according to the Norwalk Station.
The sole occupant of the other Honda escaped injury, according to the sheriff's department.
There were no immediate arrests, according to sheriff's officials, who said the investigation was continuing.
