Putting it in gear before you start pushing, surely? I've always found it very hard to get a car into gear without it producing some resistance, causing the car to slow a bit.

Heh - well for a while my Carlton Estate that I had at the time had a near-knackered battery on it, and most of the time I'd manage to push it down the very slight slope off the driveway into the cul-de-sac we live in, and get enough momentum to start it. Most of the time. If not, I'd have to go in, grab the keys to my Dad's car, drive that the small distance (20-30m) to my car, and jump-start the thing!!

Then one day I had the genius idea of backing it up onto ramps when I got in from work - problem solved - when leaving in the morning I'd roll it down off the ramps, chuck them in the boot, and do the reverse when getting home.

And a lot of people end up chopping their car in for a newer model long before the battery's likely to give up the ghost, these days.
