Brent P Um... I think I mentioned I'd been there already, done that already, seen that already. My observations bear no resemblance to yours. No arguing...

I fail to see the problem. Drivers are required to obey traffic laws. Speed limits are posted. A driver's choice to not comply with the law may result in a citation. If they are unaware of that, or unattentive to regulatory signage, they shouldn't be driving in the first place.

What's the trick? Taking dollars from violators seems reasonable. Doesn't the money go to public funds, for the benefit of all? There's always the option of pebreastioning your legislators for abolishment of limits... or running on that platform yourself.

gpsman The problem comes up in that there's officers who aren't that honest, and will write someone a ticket for...

How do the speed limit signs now posted not function as a limit? Because drivers exceed them? It's obvious that speeds above the limit might be enforced, might not. Or is your argument that since 100% of speeders aren't cited for anything over the posted limit 100% of the time, none should be?

Yeah... many people, sure.

But I think -most- people don't check their tire pressures, brakes and brake or steering fluids, until they're forced. I think -most- people rarely open the hood.

That lack of attention to, and knowledge of the roadworthiness of their vehicles makes them unsafe in my book, regardless of the actual condition of any of those safety-related items. If you don't check, you're just guessing at the condition of the vehicle, if that! You don't even need a gauge to check tire pressure but most people never expend the few seconds to give their tires even a cursory exam, much less slap a gauge to 'em.

How can you drive 85+ mph without ensuring the vehicle isn't safe to operate at any velocity? -----
