Man shoots himself after M1 chase
A man has shot himself dead on the M1 after a high-speed chase by armed police in the early hours of Thursday.
The pursuit started at a house in Thorne near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, shortly after midnight and ended about 50 miles south in Nottinghamshire.
South Yorkshire Police say officers fired a baton round at the suspect who then turned his gun on himself.
The incident led to the closure of an eight-mile stretch of the M1 between junctions 26 and 27.
Traffic had to be diverted before the motorway between Annesley and Nuthall reopened eight hours later at 0845 BST.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "As a result of information received from another force South Yorkshire officers made inquires at an address in Thorne, Doncaster.

"Police officers pursued the vehicle southbound on the M1 bringing it to a halt using standard road policing tactics, between junctions 27 and 26.
"The man was in possession of a firearm. Officers fired a baton round at the man who then turned the firearm at himself.
"Police officers immediately administered first aid but the man was pronounced dead en route to the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham."
The incident is being investigated by South Yorkshire Police's professional standards unit and has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
