I was under the impression that WD-40 was essentially a solvent with a little bit of kerosine and siome light machine oil added. I've never found it to be a good lubricant since it doesn't stick around. I think the that you'd have a hard time proving WD-40 is not a solvent, since the majority of its components ae in fact solvents of one sort or the other. Less than 25% od the composition is even claimed to be "oil" and even that is light oil, that can act very much like a solvent in many cases.
I gleaned the following from the MSDS for WD-40 and other sources
II. HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS Exposure Limit Chemical Name CAS Number % Aliphatic Petroleum Distillates 8052-41-3 45-50 Petroleum Base Oil 64742-65-0 15-25 LVP Hydrocarbon Fluid 64742-47-8 12-18 Carbon Dioxide 124-38-9 2-3 Non-hazardous Ingredients Ñ 10
Aliphatic Petroleum Distillates are a colorless liquid with a gasoline- or kerosene-like odor. Note: A mixture of paraffins (C5 to C13) that may contain a small amount of aromatic hydrocarbons. Also called Petroleum distillates (naphtha), Aliphatic petroleum naphtha, Petroleum naphtha, Rubber SOLVENT.
CAS 8052-41-3 is Stoddard SOLVENT, a colorless liquid with a kerosene-like odor. Synonyms and trade names - Dry cleaning safety solvent, Mineral spirits, Petroleum solvent, Spotting naphtha Note: A refined petroleum solvent with a flash point of 102-110¡F, boiling point of 309-396¡F, and

CAS 64742-65-0 is solvent refined neutral paraffinic oil. It is a liquid, pale yellow color, viscous with faint petroleum smell. A complex combination of hydrocarbons obtained by removal of normal paraffins from a petroleum fraction by solvent crystallization. It consists of hydrocarbons having carbon numbers predominantly in the range of C20 through C50. It produces finished oil with a viscosity near 300 SUS
CAS 64742-47-8 is hydrotreated light distillate (i.e., Light Fuel Oil, like K-1). AKA, Low odor paraffinic SOLVENT, dearomatized kerosine, deodorized kerosene. This is a mixture of C10-C14 naphthenes, iso- and n-paraffins. Neither the concentration of aromatics nor of hexane is greater than 0.1 % by volume. Depending on the raw material and the production processes, the composition and physical properties of this SOLVENT can vary considerably. The symptoms of chemical pneumonitis do not become manifest until a few hours or even a few days have pbutted. Exxsol D70 D80, Shellsol D70, Hydrosol P 200, among others, are trade names.
Essentiall WD-40 is just a bunch of light petroleum distallates of varying weights (C5 to C50). A lot like kerosine.
