I'm taking a bit of a risk here but here is my opinion for what it is worth.......
The figures might have changed a bit in recent years as I am a bit out of touch....but it used to go like this:
To work for a major driving school the instructor has to pay the school a franchise fee...this used to be equal to 16 or so lesson fees per WEEK so maybe 400 pounds a WEEK these days. They get a free car with tax, insurance, servicing and repairs included and free advertising and free booking services. They really have to work some hours to make a living after paying out this fee.
If an instructor works for himself (herself) it would cost him-her a similar amount per MONTH to run a car. Add to that a bit of advertising and hopefully a wife at home to take the bookings (or ok just an answering machine)
The big problem working for yourself is getting enough clients but a good instructor will soon get known and the calls soon come flooding in.
So, why do some instructors work for big schools then as it is so financially advantagous to work for themselves...... some of the reasons are as follows:
They are training or newly qualified They have tried and cannot get enough recomendations because they aren't good enough-smell-smoke-shout-eat sandwiches etc. They just don't want the responsibility of running their own business They don't want the hbuttle of returning calls when they finish work (an expensive decision)
In answer to your questions I am afraid I don't know of any instructors in Stoke Newington...but do you know anyone with 17 year old children? They and their friends will know several instructors. You won't see any sign of a driving school if you visit instructors houses as they just have a phone and (hopefully) a desk in their spare room!
I've got my head down now and waiting for agro from instructors working for the big schools......anyway these are just my opinions...
Good Luck
