Yep, My GF had been driving for more than 3 years and was well over 21 (hope she doesn't read this). I was 32 but not pbutted yet...

I think this is probably a good idea. I talked to the prospective instructor today and at some point he asked me how many hours I expected I would need. I knew this was a trap but decided to bite anyway. So, since all my friends pbutted the test first time after 15-20 hours of instruction, I said 15-20 (a guestimate at best obviously). As expected, he triumphantly explained I was wrong. Apparently, you need 2 hours for every year of your age! This would mean 72 hours in my case and when he realised I wasn't 18, which would conveniently give 36, he started backpedaling. I am sure instructors must be fed up with people who think they can learn how to drive in ten lessons, but the 'you are not ready yet' line is so predictable. Driving with a friend can make a huge difference here.

I am not sure how this insurance thing works. Nick was right. Directline for one seem to accept provisional licences. Does insurance cover the car or the driver? IOW, can I get a single insurance policy for different cars? Or, does one of my friends have to somehow extend his-her insurance to cover a second (learning) driver? Or, to minimise the risk of the owner of the car losing any bonus, can I get a separate insurance policy that covers me driving a particular car without interfering with the existing insurance policy of the owner?
