OK, due to circumstances I won't get into here, my wife was stranded in MD so I had to go get her on Friday. I decided to take her car as my A-C needs to be recharged and I haven't gotten around to doing that yet. To get to her, I had to cross all the way through Central PA past Scranton, Allentown, outskirts of Philly, and then on past the Baltimore area.
Most of my drive through PA was pretty pleasant. There were plenty of signs reading "Keep Right, Pbutt Left, it's the law". (Might not have gotten the exact wording right, but that's pretty close) To my amazement, for most of the drive through PA, drivers were doing JUST THAT!!! It was like the twilight zone or something. I was on track to arrive in Maryland ahead of the map software's estimated arrival time. Things were going just sooooooooooo smooth, I couldn't believe it. Every time I had to pbutt someone, THE LEFT LANE WAS CLEAR. (Holy crap!)
But of course that was too good to last. As I got closer to the Philly area (I was still on 476 SB), I caught up with a long line of backed-up traffic, doing about 10-20MPH below the speed limit, and not holding any constant speed for more than a few seconds. So lots of frustrated drivers (myself included) were making lots of lane changes trying to get through the mess. After being slowed down to WAY below normal speed for about a half hour, I finally got near the front of the whole mess. It was caused by an AMBULANCE doing 10MPH below the speed limit in the left lane. No lights or siren of course. A lot of drivers zipped past him on the right fast enough to suck his windshield off. Think he got the hint? Of course not. And after the ambulance, traffic returned to normal, flowing about 10 over the limit, as usual.
Was this an official LLB? A Code Zero LLB? A paramedic trying to drum up business by causing an accident? What the Hell? -Dave
