Wait a second. The cops didn't have enough firepower to take down those shooters. That has *nothing* to do with California's gun control laws. The police were free to use automatic weapons, machine guns, heavy stuff. And today, they are better equipped. In most California departments, the old .38 revolvers have been replaced with 9mm pistols.
And California's gun control laws in that situation could only *save* lives. Think about it: the police small arms couldn't take down those guys in body armor. Citizens carrying the same weapons wouldn't have been able to either. But if private citizens had been carrying and had pulled on those robbers, the robbers no doubt would have emptied a clip in to those people. You would just have more dead.
The only thing that was going to bring them down was a heavily armed special team (such as a SWAT team), or having a heave duty weapon with the right kind of bullets (Teflon coated to get through the body armor). In my city, IIRC every sixth squad car carries an AR15 and special ammo.
Thank you for providing an excellent example of why we need gun control. In the North Hollywood shootout, allowing citizen concealed carry would have done zero in bringing down the criminals, and would have gotten more civilians end. The people needed to stop that crime were police, and gun control laws covering citizens don't at all stop the police from being better armed.
