OK, Brent, let's put this discussion on a reality basis. No device made by man is impenetrable. Hell, the Al-Qaida could hit my van with an RPG-7 and then sift through the wreckage to find the keys in my handgun safe, but that is hardly what you'd call a high-probability scenario. To return to the real world, Joe Average Carthief does not have the patience or resources to get into one of these R&D safes. And any crook who does is not going to waste his time boosting family vans down at the supermarket parking lot. He's going to be in the back room of some jewelry store cracking the safe.
If I wanted to be absolutely sure no one was going to get the house keys out of my vehicle I'd simply buy my own Brinks truck and drive around town in *that*. But back in the real world, my house keys are most at risk when my teenage daughters toss theirs into their backpacks every morning. Some punk at school could take the opportunity to swipe their keys and then try to get into the house while my wife and I are at work. However he would quickly find himself disputing right-of-way with the family Rottweiler, who takes an extremely dim view towards strangers in the house. Subsequent apprehension of the intruder would only require following the blood trail.
This thread is starting to degenerate to the point of being ludicrous, so allow me to simply reiterate my original point:
Get yourself a high-quality handgun safe and install it securely (ie, machine bolts through the floor) in your car. You can now keep a handgun and other essential items in your vehicle with the knowledge that they are secure from any theft threat that you can reasonably expect. Major attacks by organized crime or person groups do not count.
