I heard a couple of stories from a guy who had been plating for several years (bearing in mind I did it in the early 90s)
When he was new he was on a job with another chap who had then been doing it for a long time, so knew the dodges. They were London based and had a job to Aberdeen (or thereabouts). Rather than spend time hitching back to London they went tp the airport and got "standby" tickets for the plane. About ten minute before the next flght was due to leave they were called and told that someone had just phoned and cancelled. As they're settling into their seats they guy telling me the story remarks on the stroke of luck they'd had.
The older bloke tells him that luck had nothing to do with it, he booked the seats the previous day and then got his missus to phone up and cancel thus freeing up the seats.
The second story he told me was that he was hitching from Edninburgh down to Cardiff when a chap stopped and picked him up and said it must be his lucky day as that was were he was going. Our man climbs in and off they go. After a bit, they turn off the motorway and onto minor roads. When our man queries this the drivers just says to hold on a bit and he'll see where they were going.
After a while they arrive at an airfield. It turned out that the guy giving the lift was a mail plane pilot who was indeed going to Cardiff.
