hitchhikers

Does anyone give a lift to hitchhikers or anyone with trade plates these days? Years ago I often gave a lift to anyone thumbing a lift but I must admit that now I dont bother. Why I dont know,perhaps its because I have gotten too mean or its the fear factor. After all you just never know.Also,would you stop and help someone if they had broken down? I know that if I had a breakdown I would hope that someone would stop and help, but I would'nt depend on it.Not like years ago when chances were, someone would stop and ask if you needed help.About 3 or 4 years I was on a bridge waiting in traffic due to road works when I looked down and saw a woman on her own trying to push her car out of the way. She was in a traffic queue and her car must have stalled and it would'nt start again, but no one bothered to get out of their cars and help the poor woman.She did manage eventually and I thought then "what a world we are living in" Is it the sign of the times? Is this what my grand children have to grow up in? I despair.
