That's right, but I think we should still try to spread the correct message as best we can. That way we at least have a chance of moving things in the right direction, and if a few others will take a lead from that, then we all benefit.

I know it seems a very uphill task at times but merely *trying* to make improvements can bring some reward in itself.
On the specific subject of merging in turn, I favour the idea of freely using both lanes as long as possible and then merging at the latest reasonable opportunity. This might have to be a little way short of the constriction, it's a matter of judgement again. I try to slot smoothly and naturally into a gap without it feeling like pushing in. Having done that I usually raise a hand to thank the driver who is now behind me. He may not actually have done anything particularly to buttist me, but I feel a gesture of that sort helps to promote and maintain the right spirit in our driving.
Keep it calm folks, it doesn't have to be a battle.
