Our estate sounds similar in layout. We have chicanes and speedbumps every 100 yards or so. Hasn't modified certain drivers behaviour. My wife witnessed a cracker the other day. She was standing at a bus stop which is situated on a chicane, which means traffic comes to a grinding halt when a bus appears, but thats another story. At the bus stop were the local kids waiting for the school bus, and a few people going to work. Two cars were approaching the chicane from either side, both accelerated to be first there and actually met on the chicane. Result was one car skidding to a halt on the pavement feet away from the the bus queue, and the other car hightailing it up the road minus its offside wing mirror. My wife got the number plate of the non stopper, who was sunsequently charged by the police and had to help a woman, a child minder with her kids, who had collapsed with shock because the car that had swerved onto the pavement had just missed one of her kids when she yanked him out of the way. So you can see how effective road calming can be.
