pulling out on a dual carriageway 682Certainly was not my comment. I would only slow gently on a motorway unless something unforeseen is happening ahead, but then my 3-5 second gap buffers a fair...
It was a continuous stream of cars and while on slip road they were going much slower than me so no chance of merging unless I hit the brakes!!!
You are not thinking it through. Why should motorway traffic be forced to drop speed (beyond trying to slightly adjust so we merge smoothly) and stay in lane 1, when its more than likely the joining traffic will be going slower at first. I'm prepared to adjust speed a bit or change lanes if needed, but we both have a part to play in merging smoothly if possible and when joining you should try to adjust your speed to the motorway traffic at first - not zoom down slip and instantly try and overtake motorway traffic.
If I'm joining the motorway then I try and adjust my speed (possibly slowing it a fair bit) suitable for merging to motorway and then wait for everything to settle before overtaking existing motorway traffic. Not zoom down the slip like a bull in a china shop. Its all very well that you may want to zoom off, but all the cars joining with you will not do the same and the car in lane 1 of motorway (doing 80) will have to slow. If you have to be patient and keep a hold on the reins until the car that had the courtesy to move over has had a chance to move back into lane one then so be it. In this case we are talking about a car in lane 1 doing 75-80 so its hardly a problem to hold your horses for a short while if you really must zoom off so fast on joining motorway. Personally I feel its best to adjust to motorway traffic speed before going too mental.
