it seems we have a difference of opinion of what consitutes a hazard... to a bicyclist, *every motor vehicle* is a very real threat, of course much more so than when driving. so the question isn't "should i always get the frig off the road when there's a car coming?" it's "what is the safest behavior i can practice?"
i think there also should be some balance--obviously the safest way to ride one's bike is probably to wait til there are no cars in sight, and then very carefully pedal down the road until one sees a car approaching in any direction, then pull off the road and wait for the car to drive past, lather rinse repeat. but this doesn't do a very good job of allowing the reason for riding a bike in the first place. ;-)
therefore, you'll see bikers taking the lane, riding in the road when there's a bike lane, not riding on the sidewalks (which many drivers think they *should do* when there's a sidewalk), and other behaviors that many drivers mistake as "arrogance" when it's really a mix of practicality and self-preservation (for everyone involved).
