Adrian sounding much like they were saying : What is wrong with people - I drove correctly and safely - Maybe the van driver didn't see it that way. If he was driving at the minimum safe distance from car 1 (2 second gap) how could you fit into that gap and still claim to have been driving safely? The van would no longer have a safe minimum distance from the car in front of him, which is now you. He could always ease of the accelerator for a second. But why SHOULD he?
It's called sharing the road.
Sums up todays f*** you, arrogance and atbreastude society really. Don't you just? "I'm shoving into this space come what may - and it's for you to adjust YOUR driving to accomodate ME."
Almost as bad as 'I claim the road space in front of me so no-one can enter it'. Drivers co-operating so everyone can use the road safely isn't as radical a concept as you seem to imagine.
112: If you need to change lane, first use your mirrors and check your blind spots (the areas you are unable to see in the mirrors) to make sure you will not force another driver or rider to swerve or slow down.
Note the use of the word 'force'. You seem to be under the impression that no driver should ever adjust his driving to accomodate another. Not only is that atbreastude dangerous but it is also extremely impractical.
143: DO NOT overtake where you might come into conflict with other road users. For example * when you would force another vehicle to swerve or slow down
This is the problem when people use the HC not as a guide, but as an alternative to actually thinking. Using the logic displayed by some, in medium to heavy traffic with everyone driving the minimum safe distance from the car in front, no one could ever change lanes.
