Where does it say that? HC105 says to keep at least a 2 second gap from the vehicle in front. That is in the section talking about stopping distances. HC144 deals with being overtaken and says to drop back to maintain a 2 second gap if someone pulls into the gap in front of you. Nowhere does it say you should maintain a gap large enough for an overtaking vehicle to fit in front of you. That would require you to know the length of the vehicle and its intensions. What if it was a lorry, what if the OP was going to overtake the lead car too? It would make the queue even longer if every vehicle had to leave a gap large enough for someone to safely pull into during an overtake.

True, but we don't know the full circumstances, just what the OP has told us.
Agreed, but overtaking at an inappropriate place that causes another vehicle to slow down or swerve is also inconsiderate and contrary to HC143.
The OP said the lead car was travelling at 10 mph below the limit, nothing wrong with that. The speed limit isn't a target, why was the OP in such a hurry? Why did he not overtake the lead car too? Did he have to swerve in quickly to avoid a head on collision with someone coming the other way or was it just because the straight road met a bend?
Having said that I did safely overtake a BMW Z3 that was following a motorised horse box on a country road today, and without exceeding the 60 limit. I did wait quite a long time for a safe pbutting place though. Patience is a virtue.
