satnav blamed for increased traffic!! 1717PC Paul excellent. don't forget to share. information wants to be free ;-) refer to the tomtom interviews that have been in the media recently. grade one = motorway and...
Next time I'm at MCE Feltham where the OS gets a lot of it's raw map data from I'll see if they have a leaflet that isn't clbuttified.
Or maybe I'll ask the OS Field Survey office in the building next door to where I work.
And the grades are linked to road designations how?
Your evidence?
I can give you routes to try on *your* Tomtom that go through a town not along the bypbutt. It's the shortest route. It's an A road, same as the bypbutt, therefore it *thinks* it's also the fastest route.
Fastest: Use highest grade roads. Shortest. Use rat runs unless there is very little in it. Avoid Mways. Easy.
How about 'I'm driving a 7.5t van'?
How about 'I have a car on a trailer and can't do 1:8 or worse hills, or hairpin bends'?
There are lots of things it can't do. I've written route finding algorithms for everything from amphibious vehicles to tanks to 100+ tonne tank transporters. That's about as wide a spread of roads (or not roads...) they can use as you can get.
Current Satnavs are very very inflexible. Because they have to be useable by people like you.
Good for you.
