They are needed.

I about got plowed over when I was a sophomore in HS, due to another driver's ignorance. I attended a football game with a clbuttmate's family. On the trip home, we came to a stop sign that's at an intersections with a rail crossing. The driver, my friend's father, stopped on the tracks (which is past the stop sign, incidently) to wait for traffic to clear on the road. He had the radio up rather loudly, listening to another HS football game. I noticed everyone in the car had a reasonable amount of illumination on the left side of their head, so I looked left to observe a loco bearing down on us.

Who's at fault here
Doods leave a car in the middle of the road where it's hit by a speeding drunk driver and all...

I yelled to the father to pull forward; he didn't understand why. I yelled back something regarding a train approaching us at a high velocity, as well as some derogatory statements regarding his intelligence, and he pulled off the tracks just before train went by.

I never went anywhere with them again. One of the kids died in an automobile accident a couple of years later, strangely enough.

Hi! N8N The price you'd have to pay to avoid this would be the elimination of level crossings between tracks...

Are people too damned stupid to understand the significance of a pair of rails crossing the asphalt? I mean, the train's tracks are there, so there's a reasonable chance a train will be crossing in the future.
