this can't be for real

Motorcycle Helmets and Libertarians
In some of these groups I have read posters whining about losing freedom and civil liberties, by being forced to wear and-or use safety equipment...

Well, that answers the question about what the cops will do instead: chase down cars whose transponders didn't reply on cue.

I expect a thriving market in hacks, responded-to in due time with seals that get checked during a regular safety inspection, and so on. Electronics get countermeasures upon their backs to bite 'em; ECM gets ECCM, and on ad infinitum.

The possibility of this sort of thing provoked a small brief scare in the US several years ago, but I don't think anybody formally proposed anything quite that Orwellian as a means of speed enforcement.

There have been other (mis)uses of stored speed data, via pgysically jacking in to the OnBoard Diagnostics II connector. For instance, one region of one rent-a-car company briefly penalized customers who'd racked up Naughty speeds. They quit after a huge outcry. And I think there's a black box you can stick into the connector at home to see how fast junior was going last night.

Further possibilities are up to the reader's imagination, especially as the age of ubiquitous polymorphous connectivity moves ever onward... We may see a time when it's so easy to be "bugged" that you simply buttume it's happening always and everywhere.
