Couple of years ago, I got stuck in Edinburgh with bad snow everywhere.

I had to double back outside of Dalkeith. I'm driving in six inches of settled snow, plus blizzard, plus ice under the snow, in a 1998 Ford Scorpio Auto estate with traction control which prevents the car from moving in snow. Approaching the roundabout, a Rover 214 stops. I'm a good 200+ yards away and barely exceeding 20mph. However, as I brake, the ABS kicks in... and there is ice, too. Normally I'd lock the wheels slightly, start building up a wedge of snow, then cadence brake.

No chance.

So... off with traction control, over to the wrong side of the road (around the island)... Rover still hasn't moved...

Heh. Ouch. My recent roll (not my own doing I have to add in here) illustrated that even a slow speed collision (inside 30 mph) can cause a dramatic and tragic loss of control...

Fling the car sideways, floor it, and send the car left towards Newtongrange. Past the front of the still immobile (no hazards or anything, seemingly just waiting) Rover...

drove fast.

Airbag? Pah. People don't think like that. Make 'em drive a Fiat Panda without windows they might go slower.

An interesting link. However it doesn't give details of the techniques used by the drivers without ABS . In particular I'm thinking of cadence braking. Under normal braking the results are what I would expect. Whilst...
