I agree its a good idea to keep un-necessary through traffic out, but that can be accomplished through other means, like traffic calming, so it will still be possible for through traffic to get through, but discouraged. However local trips between neighborhoods can still get through, and in an emergency situation, some redundancy exists as well.
Its especailly bad almost anywhere a developer is left on their own to design street layouts. Once the local municipality gets involved, often another connection gets built.

As for gated communities, I've seen them where they have one "main gate" with the guard booth, but they often have several side gates for resident card-access only. The residents of gated communities want it to be as convenient as possible for them, and they don't ever have to worry about through traffic either....
Many areas now require that new developments connect to adjacent developments....not necessarily for the reasons Nate states, but because it reduces the amount of traffic on collector streets and arterials when neighborhood-neighborhood traffic doesn't have to exit out onto a main road only to turn into the next subdivision.
I'm not a fan of "grid" patterns, but I am a fan of some connectivity....
