A year or two back, I and many others were commuting north up the M66 when a glaring of brake lights announced a halt. The entire motorway stopped, and stayed stopped for a couple of hours or so.
What had happened was that the sudden snow showers had taken the gritters by surprise, so the motorway hadn't been gritted. Then two tailgating nitwits shunted each other.
The police got involved somehow, and chased off up the motorway to buttist. The first cop car hit something, and the second cop car hit the first.
So, such a concentration of stupidity being certainly an utter impossibility they closed the motorway to investigate, leaving everyone stuck there like lemons waiting for them to get all three braincells on message, clear the bloody road and let everyone get off home.
