My present car has a trip computer that works out fuel consumption, both average over a few seconds and over a distance. I have seen the result vary from about 30mpg up to 117mpg over distances of a few miles, the first stop-start driving (several journeys of a mile or two) in a city on the hottest day of the year, the other through motorway road works at a constant 40mph in 6th gear.

Can you believe the manufacturers mpg figures? Probably not, even if you knew which of the published figures to apply to your journey..
There are some routing websites, IIRC viamichelin is one, that will attempt to calculate you fuel costs over a given route, givien that you enter your car's fuel consumption. Never tried to use it though, so I don't know how well it works.
